Indian Defence Industry Delegation to International Military Technical Forum ‘ARMY’ 2019
The Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers successfully mounted an Industry delegation to International Military-Technical Forum ‘ARMY’ 2019 from 26-27 June 2019 in Moscow, Russia. The delegation comprised of 11 Industry members from 7 companies and one SIDM Representative. The delegation, not limited to Russian firms, cumulatively held 42 meetings with companies present at ARMY 2019.
Upon the arrival of the delegation on 25th June, the delegation was hosted by His Excellency Mr D.B Venkatesh Varma, Ambassador of the Republic of India to Russia, at Embassy of India, Moscow. The event provided an informal platform for the delegation to interact with the Ambassador and other Embassy officials.
Inauguration of India Pavilion
SIDM Rep and Leader of the Industry Delegation attended the Inauguration of ‘INDIA’ pavilion at ‘ARMY’ 2019. Leader of the Industry Delegation and SIDM Rep subsequently accompanied the Ambassador and MoD Delegation on tour around the exhibition which showcased Russia’s latest offering such the S-400s, BMPs etc.
Interaction with Joint Secretary (Land Systems)
On 26th June, an Interaction with Shri Shantanu, Joint Secretary (Land Systems) with the Industry delegation was organized at the INDIA pavilion. The interaction provided the Industry delegates to voice their agenda at ARMY 2019 and concern with respect to doing business with Russian counterparts. The JS assured Industry of continued support from the MoD in clearing policy bottlenecks in doing business. He stressed that Russia conducts the Military Industrial Conference only with India and hence, scope and interest from the Russian side to build industry-to-industry connect is present. He mentioned that the 5th MIC is going to be held either at the end of the year or at DEFEXPO 2020. The JS also conveyed that the MoD is working on an SOP for Protection of Intellectual Property under Transfer of Technology and will be seeking comments from SIDM for its development. Lastly, the JS urged the delegation to explore meeting companies from foreign countries present at the exhibition.
SIDM Rep was called for a meeting with the Department of Investments and Industry of Yaroslavl Region. The meeting comprised of interaction with 3 companies present in the Yaroslavl Region: Yaroslavl Radio Works, Yaroslavl Shipyard and Vympel Shipyard. The outcome of the interaction(s) is as follows:
- Yaroslavl Radio Works - The Company is ready to engage in ToT to meet the demands of the Indian market as well as Export from India. The company specializes in tactical and space communication instruments.
- Yarsoslavl Shipyard – The Company is interested in exploring ‘Make in India’ programs with an Indian firm to serve the Indian market.
- Vympel Shipyard – The Company is ready to explore partnership opportunities with Indian firms for military and civil use items. They conveyed that they would be participating at DEFEXPO 2020 and would like to have B2Bs with Indian counterparts during the forum.
In reference to the companies mentioned above, SIDM Rep suggested that a list of interested Indian companies may be drawn up amongst SIDM members to partner with the respective companies. The said list could be shared with the companies in the next few months to begin initial dialogue. Subsequent meetings could then be held during the MICs to progress further.
SIDM Rep also held a meeting with the representative of Azerbaijan’s Defence Expo: ADEX, 8-10 September 2020 during the Forum. It was conveyed to SIDM Rep that Azerbaijan’s Defence Industry is keen to partner with Indian companies to explore areas of mutual cooperation. It was highlighted that Azerbaijan’s MoD will be writing to Indian MoD to mount an official delegation. SIDM Rep, in reply, conveyed that Industry’s willingness and interest will be sought and a decision to mount an industry delegation will be taken accordingly.
Along with meeting rep from Azerbaijan’s Defence Expo, SIDM Rep had meetings with Kazakhstan and South Africa pavilion respectively where a brief of the Industry delegation was shared.
Interaction with Rosoboronexport
On 27th June, the delegation interacted with Mr Sergey Gorbenko, Chief of Marketing Directorate and 2 other officials from Rosoboronexport. The delegation gave a brief introduction and conveyed their agenda at ARMY 2019.
Interaction with H.E Ambassador D.B Venkatesh Varma
The last engagement of the visit involved calling on H.E Ambassador D. B Venkatesh Varma by Leader of the Industry delegation and SIDM Rep to brief him on the delegation’s visit to ARMY 2019. SIDM Rep thanked the ambassador for the support given by the Embassy of India prior to and during the event. It was highlighted that SIDM will continue to play an active role in pursuing Indian private Industries’ cooperation with Russian companies. Lastly, a token of appreciation on behalf of the Industry and delegation was presented to the Ambassador.
